Horseshoe Crab

Limulus polyphemus

A living fossil, this creature is from another time. Although not a crab, they closer in relation to arachnids.

For decades their blue blood has been harvested by the pharmaceutical industry for Amebocytes, a bodily defense against foreign bodies. This has been used as a control for detecting bacteria in tests.

Although released after the procedure, a synthetic version is available and blood harvesting continues to be questioned.

Original pen and ink drawing on toned paper - size 7 ½” x 7 ½”

10% of sales will go to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
